Coach Decker

Steve Decker came back home to the Shenendehowa baseball program in 2008 as a volunteer assistant with the Freshman team.  In 2009, Coach Decker was appointed as Head Freshman Baseball Coach, which he held for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.  He currently serves as the program's Junior Varsity head coach in which he will be entering his second year.

With an emphasis on teaching the players the game of baseball and preparing them for the Varsity level, Coach Decker saw his Freshman teams accumulate 21 wins alongside 13 losses (.617 winning percentage).

Coach Decker played under Coach Carrese at the Varsity level in the 1996 and 1997 seasons.  His 1996 team won the Section Two title and advanced to the NYS tournament where they were runner’s up in the championship final.

Coach Decker decided to join the work field after high school and not pursure playing college baseball. After working in the restaurant business for eight years, he realized his true passion and desire to be involved in athletics.  Coach Decker enrolled himself into the Physical Education program at Sage College of Albany and graduated magna cum-laude with a B.S. in 2007. As he completed his degree, Coach Decker volunteered his time as a Varsity Assistant with the Watervliet High baseball program in 2007.  Coach Decker is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Sports Coaching with an estimated completion date in 2012.

When he is not coaching, Coach Decker leads an active lifestyle consisting of playing softball, basketball, golfing, wiffle ball, and exercising.  He can be seen assisting the other coaches on an as need basis with the summer and winter camps. He currently resides in Round Lake with his wife Michele and expecting their first child in May 2012.
