Steve Decker started his coaching career with the Shenendehowa baseball program in 2008 as a volunteer assistant with the Freshman team working with Coach Lansley. In 2009, Coach Decker was appointed as Head Freshman Baseball Coach, which he held for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He currently serves as the program's Junior Varsity head coach and assists with catchers and first basemen in the program.
With an emphasis on teaching the players the game of baseball and preparing them for the Varsity level, Coach Decker saw his Freshman teams accumulate 21 wins alongside 13 losses (.617 winning percentage).
Coach Decker played for the Shenendehowa program for four years including two at the Varsity level during the 1996 and 1997 seasons as a pitcher and first basemen. His 1996 team won the Section Two title and advanced to the NYS tournament where they were runner’s up in the championship final.
Coach Decker did not attend college after high school, but instead entered the restaurant business. After eight years, he realized his true passion and desire to be involved in athletics. Coach Decker enrolled himself into the Physical Education program at Sage College of Albany and graduated magna cum-laude with a B.S. in 2007. As he completed his degree, he volunteered his time as a Varsity Assistant with the Watervliet High baseball program in 2007. Coach Decker is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Sports Coaching with an estimated completion date in 2013. He currently teaches Physical Education at Karigon Elementary School.
When he is not coaching, Coach Decker leads an active lifestyle consisting of playing softball, basketball, golf, wiffle ball, and exercising. He can be seen assisting the other coaches on an as need basis with the summer and winter camps. He currently resides in Round Lake with his wife Michele and daughter Jocelyn.
