Mental Game: January`s Word of the Month: Confidence "I`m going to sit on this guy`s fastball and go right with it". The confident hitter has that mental approach as he goes thru his mental checklist in his "On Deck behavior" routine. The average HS player lets the mental imagery of failure set in when he allows the the thought" this guy is throwing seeds", I have no shot" !!! Confident players know they may fail because baseball is a game of "Overcoming Adversity". They are realistic. They also never consent to failure. They believe they can succeed and when they fail their approach is "next pitch" or "next at bat" !! Fear is a great motivator !! Confident players take the fear of a challenging situation in a game {2 out basehit mentality} and learn to cope with it successfully. Dorfman writes" The great ones can control their fear, rather than to be controlled by it-they use the energy from the situation to create a positive energy. Confidence is Positive energy!! Fear derives from uncertainity. To eliminate fear the player must practice difficult situations in the game. Runner on 2B and 0 outs. Move the runner to third any way you can !! Bunt to the right side, drive the middle away fastball to the right side, deep fly ball to right field.....anyway you can!! More to come on....Confidence......
